This is the Subway outside of Garret Hall at WKU. Contrary to its typical state, it is quite docile. Also seen is one of the many ATM's on campus and the entrance to Garret Hall.

This is a building named Cherry Hall. Its namesake, Henry Hardin Cherry, founder of Western Kentucky University would definitely be unhappy of the buildings condition.

Just one of the hundreds of vehicles on the WKU maintenance fleet. A new Ford Ranger costs approximately $18,000 to the general public, One would assume each truck was not bought at full price but one would also question why such a vast fleet is needed.

Hardin Planetarium; Dead as usual, the maintenance on this building must be expensive. One might wonder how useful it is and how long it is before it replaced.

This is main building of the Ogden College of Science, Thompson Complex. This is, in my opinion, the second most run-down building on campus. The tile is dirty and faded, the walls are discolored and the ceilings are old.

These vending machine are positively the most expensive pieces of equipment in WKU's science buildings.

This is Western Kentucky University's main library, Raymond Cravens. The most run down building in all of Campus, if not all of Bowling Green. If you can make it past the squeaky floors, cob webs and the maze of stairs and doors, you may just find books. But you wonder how much funding has been put into this building over the past century. Why does WKU renovate Preston Health Center and other athletic facilities while the library remains run down.

A damaged bench outside of Raymond Cravens

Here we see precisely the amount of money being invested into "New Books".

This is a recreation of the plans for the Downing University Center at WKU. It has been announced that the renovation will cost nearly 50 million dollars and will be completed over 4 years.

  1. There was no statement of purpose so I really have no idea what this is about. The photos were nice but there was no clear, beginning, or end. You had a nice variety of shots, but you could try taking pictures of the insides of the buildings, like the inside of the library. The only question I have right now is what is the purpose of this? I think I got an idea, but it's never really stated. Overall though, you did a really good job. The pictures and captions were nice, just work on your statement of purpose.

  2. I could actually relate to the purpose because it is something like mine.I think that the story flows pretty well just add more information into the captions and you will be good to go . I think you took the perfect pictures for this essay maybe add one or two more just to add a special effect. Why isthis subeject important to you? I was suprised to see more things wrong with Cherry Hall than I found its suprising how little funding is actually given. Most effective were the pictures . Need to add more information to captions and like I mentioned before maybe a picture or two more and you will be good to go. good Job!

  3. You have a great theme that could make this piece go a long way and all you need to do is write better captions and then go on and do the end and begining piece and you should be good to go.

  4. I'm not sure what the intent of this photo essay is, but I assume it's to document the crumbling infrastructure of our campus. That, however, needs to be explicitly clear. You need a statement of purpose to tell us this.

Also, your captions aren't doing a whole lot. They simply describe the photos and/or offer some unverified fact. For example, do you really know how many service vehicles the university owns and maintains? The actual cost incurred by the school on these vehicles? If not, you can't just say these trucks cost this amount and we have this many--there has to be some sort of support.

In your photo of the planetarium, you say "dead as usual." But there are showtimes on the sign in front. Perhaps you'd see something a bit different if you had taken this photo just before the planetarium was offering a show--but to suggest it's "dead as usual" in this photo is like going to a church on a Tuesday afternoon and saying the same thing--try a Sunday morning.

The narrative aspect is sort of lacking here and that makes it a bit incoherent and loosely constructed. I would suggest you document a day in your life as a student, photographing the places that you see every day and the things you notice every day. That way, there is at least a story element to hold it together.

I think this is a solid start, but a lot is missing.

    Keep going.
